Why YouTube pays influencers better than most platforms
Most social platforms pay creators from a fixed fund or not at all. YouTube shares the revenue from ads shown on your videos, which means your income grows directly with your views. On top of that, YouTube is the world's second-largest search engine: a tutorial or review that ranks for a popular search can attract views, and earn, for years.
That longevity changes how YouTube influencers should think. A TikTok is a lottery ticket; a well-optimised YouTube video is closer to a rental property. The creators who earn the most combine ad revenue with sponsorships, affiliate links and their own products, so a single video can pay four ways.
YouTube Partner Program requirements
To earn from YouTube directly you need to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). YouTube has used a tiered system, so check YouTube Studio's Earn tab for the current thresholds in your country. The commonly cited requirements are:
| Tier | Typical requirements | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Fan funding tier | 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | Channel memberships, Super Thanks, Super Chat, Super Stickers, YouTube Shopping (where available) |
| Full ad revenue tier | 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue on long-form videos and Shorts, YouTube Premium revenue, plus all fan funding |
You also need to follow YouTube's monetization policies, live in an eligible region, have 2-Step Verification on, and link an AdSense account. Reused content, mass-produced clips and borderline topics can get applications rejected, so original, advertiser-friendly videos matter.
RPM and CPM by niche
Two numbers decide your ad income. CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what you actually earn per 1,000 video views after YouTube's share and after views that showed no ads. RPM is the number to plan with. It swings dramatically by niche and audience location. The ranges below are rough estimates for long-form videos with a mostly US audience, not guarantees:
| Niche | Estimated long-form RPM | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal finance, investing | $10 - $30 | Financial advertisers pay premium rates |
| Business, software, tech reviews | $6 - $18 | High-value products and B2B buyers |
| Education, how-to | $4 - $12 | Long watch time, brand-safe content |
| Beauty, fashion, fitness | $3 - $10 | Strong consumer brand demand |
| Travel, food, lifestyle | $2 - $8 | Broad but competitive audiences |
| Gaming, entertainment | $1.50 - $5 | Younger audiences, lower ad rates |
Shorts RPMs are much lower, often a few cents to well under a dollar per 1,000 views, because revenue is pooled and split across creators. Longer videos (8 minutes and up) can carry mid-roll ads, which can lift RPM noticeably.

Sponsorships and brand deals
For most mid-sized channels, sponsorships out-earn AdSense. A 60-to-90 second integration in a video is the most common format, followed by dedicated videos and channel-wide partnerships. Brands usually price YouTube sponsorships on expected views, often in a range of roughly $10 to $50 per 1,000 views for an integration depending on niche, with finance and tech at the top of that range. Dedicated videos and usage rights command more.
- Price from your average views per video over the last 90 days, not subscribers.
- Offer packages: integration, plus pinned comment, plus community post, plus a Short cut-down.
- Charge extra for usage rights, whitelisting (brand runs your video as an ad) and exclusivity.
- Use YouTube's paid promotion disclosure checkbox on every sponsored video.

Making YouTube Shorts pay
Shorts are the fastest way to grow a YouTube channel, but they are a weak way to earn directly. Treat Shorts as a funnel: hook new viewers, then send them to long-form videos where RPMs and sponsorship value are higher. Practical moves:
Related video links
Link each Short to a relevant long-form video so viewers flow to content that earns more.
Repurpose
Cut the best 30 seconds of every long video into a Short. One shoot, two formats.
Shopping tags
Where YouTube Shopping is available, tag products in Shorts to earn affiliate commission.
Sponsor bundles
Sell Shorts as add-ons to long-form sponsorships instead of on their own.
Memberships, Super Thanks and fan funding
Fan funding rewards depth of community rather than raw views. Channel memberships let viewers pay monthly for badges, emojis, members-only videos and lives. Super Chat and Super Stickers let fans pay to highlight messages in live streams. Super Thanks lets viewers tip on regular videos. A channel with 20,000 loyal subscribers and regular lives can earn more from fans than a 200,000-subscriber channel that never interacts.
Affiliate links and your own products
Video descriptions and pinned comments are prime affiliate real estate, especially for reviews, tutorials and "what's in my bag" content. Disclose every affiliate link clearly. Beyond affiliate income, YouTube is a powerful launchpad for your own products: courses, templates, presets, coaching and merch. Monetizing Influencers recommends sending viewers to a website you own, where you can capture emails and sell without platform fees. YouTube growth tips that raise earnings
- Target searchable topics. Titles that match real searches ("how to…", "best… for…", "X vs Y") keep earning.
- Win the click. Thumbnails and titles decide click-through rate. Test bold, simple thumbnails with one clear idea.
- Hold attention. Open with the payoff, cut dead air and use chapters. Retention drives recommendations.
- Publish on a rhythm. A predictable schedule trains your audience and the algorithm.
- Build playlists. Series and playlists increase session time and views per visitor.
- Pick an advertiser-friendly angle. Within your niche, topics close to purchases (reviews, comparisons, tools) raise RPM and sponsor demand.
